R7-Choosing the right technology!

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

What do we want our students to do with technology?

Pedagogical-Social-Technical (PST) Framework

We have being taught to use PST to evaluate ICT tools in three aspects of affordance when planning for ICT integration; deciding on which tools are more suitable for specific learning contexts. There are three key considerations when using PST to evaluate technology tools,

Using PST framework to determine the appropriate technology to support learning.
  1. Learning Objectives - What do we want our students to be able to do at the end of the lesson/course,

  2. Learners’ Characteristics & (Special) Needs - What are the diverse learning needs that we need to cater to and,

  3. Learning Context - What is the environment and how will it impact what is learned or taught.

Example of PST framework in action:

Pedagogical Affordances

Social Affordances

Technical Affordances

Ways you can use it for

diverse learners

PowerPoint

  1. Chunking of stories by slides

  2. Can add visual and auditory content

  3. Very customisable according learning objectives

  1. Stories can be paused for Q&A sessions

  2. Can embed other tech tools (e.g., Kahoot) into the slides for interaction

  3. Collaborative story-telling where everyone can participate actively according to individual slides

  1. Available across devices

  2. Low barrier of entry

  3. Available offline too

  1. Multisensory approach with different multimedia available

  2. Stories can be video-recorded from within PowerPoint and students can re-watch it at their own time -> foster independence
