R8-Use of photographs in teaching and learning

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

According to Zadina in Multiple Pathways to the Student Brain", individuals remember pictures more easily than words and "recall is more than 6 times better" when pictures are presented with words.

"A picture is worth a thousand words!" This cliché tells us that pictures are more detailed than words. Learners respond better to pictures than words. They slow down processing so learners can grasp situations more deeply and accurately. They help activate associations and analogies, as the use of familiar situations or photos on the topic being taught allows the unfamiliar to be understood, stimulating cognition. Pictures also promote engagement and facilitate generalisation to the real world.

Photographs can also be used to encourage flexible thinking in learners. Students can learn to look at things from multiple perspectives to gain different perceptions and thus develop empathy. As they also learn to use photographs to express themselves other than verbally, this improves their communication skills.

"Perspective 1" shows Perception that there is "Danger! Stay away from the edge."

"Perspective 2" shows Perception of "Safety!"
